I popped into the grocery store after dropping my daughter off at school to get supplies for the Let Her Out 5th Birthday Celebration. I gathered flowers and a small cake and approached the florist with a big, gold mylar balloon in the shape of the number 5.
Florist: What color do you want the ribbon?
Me: Florist’s choice.
Florist: Is it for a girl or boy?
I know my eyes instantly did the thing where you look down at the corner of the floor in a moment of “hmmm…what do I say here?”
Me: Actually, neither. It’s for my book — which turns 5 tomorrow.
(Feeling slightly nervous she’d give me an eye roll.)
Florist: Wow — very cool. What’s it about?
Me: It’s called Let Her Out: Reclaim Who You Have Always Been.
She proceeded to blow up the balloon and added a gold ribbon.
Florist: Congratulations — that is really cool.
Me: This is probably the weirdest request you’ll have all day.
Florist: I’ll take it.
People will cheer you on when you share what’s really going on. Let them be part of something bigger, and they will join you.
